General Information
The Danish Camp Riverside Visitor Centre, a Norwegian Log cabin is situated on the banks of the River Great Ouse in Willington, some 5 miles east of Bedford.
Danish Camp, our family business was opened on Saturday 28th July 2001 by the Mayor of Bedford, Mrs. Pat Olney. The log cabin at Danish Camp is situated on the banks of the River Great Ouse in Willington, Bedford. The ‘Moated Site’ is adjacent and although in private ownership, is an English Heritage Scheduled Ancient monument, one of the very few water-filled moats, still remaining from the viking age. History tells of the Danes sailing from The Wash to Willington, where they made a homestead and repair harbour...the layout of the land that can be seen today certainly suggests a substantial settlement. The site has always been known as ‘Danish Camp’ and was opened to the public in August 2007.
We also have a wildfowl collection, the only one left in Bedfordshire today that is open to the public. Escorted tours are by arrangement during the Winter months and at scheduled times in the Summer months. Groups visits by arrangement at any time during the year, weather permitting.
Enjoy walks and off-road cycle rides along 'The Countryway', part of Route 51 on the Sustrans Network. Cycle hire is available at Danish Camp.
NEW FOR 2009
We have now completed our very
exciting project!
We have restored a wide-beamed, steel barge, The Artful Dodger! We will be operating short river trips from Danish Camp and longer trips to Bedford and back again...indulge in a cream tea or light bite along the way...or just relax and enjoy the river views...the possibilities are endless. We are looking forward to this new venture and to seeing many families, friends, social and corporate groups enjoying this new facility.
